Architectural competition for the Saaremaa State Gymnasium won the Sirge (Straight) idea project

19.11.2018 Riigi Kinnisvara AS opened the calling cards of the competition works of the architectural competition of the Saaremaa State Gymnasium, organized in cooperation with the Ministry of Education and Science, the Saaremaa County Council and the Estonian Union of Architects.

The competition was won by the project of the idea Sirge (Straight) by Martin Kinks, Risto Parve, Kai Süda, Margit Valma and Heldi Jürisoo from the architectural bureau KARISMA arhitektid OÜ.

Vice Chancellor of the Ministry of Education and Science, Mikk Kasesalk, confirmed that the preparatory work for the creation of the Saaremaa State Gymnasium went well. «The aim of state-run gymnasiums is to offer quality education everywhere in Estonia. One of the prerequisites for this is the current educational building, where it is cozy, comfortable and good for both students and teachers. Congratulations to the winners of the competition! One big step in building a new school has been made».

Architectural competition coordinator and project director of Riigi Kinnisvara AS, Taavi Aare, summed up the feedback from the jury about the winning work: “The winning work is architecturally good, with a clear concept, takes into account the originality and development of the area, simple and straightforward. From the point of view of the master plan, it was possible a clear solution, with a strong axle and organized rooms, a solid and well-bred main entrance». In addition, the jury noted that the building is a compact form that improves energy efficiency.

The Saaremaa State Gymnasium is planned for 540 students, and its net area will be about 4 100 sq m. The school will be opened in the fall of 2021. The construction of the gymnasium building is funded from the European Regional Development Fund and the state budget.

The parish architect of the Saaremaa Parish municipality Mark Grimitlicht: «The competition was pleasant to many participants, and the choice of the winning work was a fairly big puzzle for the jury. In the case of the winning work, the clear concept and successful solution from the point of view of the master plan were decisive. A strong axis and organized premises create the prerequisites for a more accurate design, the winning work is even better».

The total fund of the competition for ideas is a total of 24 000 €, which is distributed as follows:
— I place — 9 000 €,
— II and III places — 6 000 € each.
Incentive awards were given out two, in the total amount of 3 000 €.
